Here's the honest answer: Lakewood Ranch is an inland community. You are not walking to the beach from your front door. Depending on which neighborhood you're in, you're looking at roughly 30 minutes to an hour to the nearest Gulf beaches — Siesta Key, Lido Key, Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key, or even St. Pete Beach if you're willing to make a day of it.
Here's what I tell every buyer who pauses on that number: you are not trading the beach for a subdivision. You are trading beachfront proximity for newer construction, significantly lower flood risk, lower insurance costs, better schools, and a lifestyle infrastructure that coastal communities flat out cannot match. Those are real tradeoffs, and for most buyers they are worth it.
It is a different relationship with the coast than living on it. And most people end up loving it more than they thought they would — because they get the best of both without the insurance bill, the flood risk, and the weekend traffic that comes with beachfront living.
What's the Traffic Actually Like?
I'm going to be straight with you: Lakewood Ranch has traffic. It is a growing community of over 70,000 people and the road network is still catching up to the pace of development.
The main pain point is the University Parkway and I-75 interchange. That corridor gets busy — especially during season from January through April when the snowbird population peaks and the roads are at their fullest. If you visit during that window and hit that intersection at the wrong time, you will notice it.
But here is the context that matters: traffic is relative.
If you are coming from Atlanta, Chicago, northern Virginia, or anywhere in the New York metro area, what you will experience in Lakewood Ranch on your absolute worst day is the equivalent of getting stuck at a long traffic light waiting for a left turn. It is not gridlock. It is not 45 minutes to go six miles. It is a minor inconvenience by almost any major metro standard — and I say that not to dismiss the concern, but because I have watched buyers from those markets visit, drive around for two days, and come back to me saying "I don't understand what everyone was worried about."
The road infrastructure is also actively expanding. If traffic is a real concern for your daily routine, it is worth asking your agent which neighborhoods have the best access to the routes you will actually be using — that answer varies depending on where in Lakewood Ranch you buy.
Is Lakewood Ranch Only for Retirees?

Yes, there are 55-plus neighborhoods — Del Webb Catalina and Cresswind are purpose-built for active adults and they are genuinely excellent options for that buyer. But the majority of Lakewood Ranch's neighborhoods are all-ages, and the actual buyer mix reflects that reality.
Families with school-age kids, remote workers in their thirties and forties, move-up buyers, second-home buyers — they are all here, in real numbers, not as a marketing claim. The average resident age in Lakewood Ranch is right around 50. That is not a retirement community. That is a community where you will find your people regardless of what life stage you are in.
Premier Sports Campus — one of the top youth athletic facilities in the entire country, with 23 FIFA-regulation fields across 140 acres — is right here in Lakewood Ranch. That facility alone hosts national-level tournaments year-round and draws families from across the country. It tells you everything about how seriously this community takes its non-retiree buyer.
Manatee County Commission just approved moving forward with an $80 million ice sports complex at Premier Sports Campus North. The proposed facility would span over 150,000 square feet with four ice sheets — including three NHL-sized pads and one Olympic-sized pad — which would make it the largest ice sports complex in the entire Southeast. Construction is targeted to begin in 2027 with an opening in 2028. This community is not standing still.
The combination of Premier Sports Campus, A-rated schools across both Manatee and Sarasota counties, and a community events calendar that runs year-round is not what you build for a retirement community. It is what you build for a place where families want to put down roots.
